Way back in elementary school we learned that the Earth travels around the Sun, and the Moon travels around the Earth. In middle school we learned that the Moon's rotation is matched almost identically with the Earth's, hence why we only see one face of the Moon.
After 15 years, I learned something NEW about the Moon. Thanks to the inquisitive nature of a student, I came to understand that the moon's "fullness" is directly related to its moon-rise and moon-set. A full moon's earthfacing surface is nearly flush with sunlight, requiring the sun to be on the o
ther side of earth. Likewise, a newmoon is always out during the daylight hours. This sun-moon relationships also connects to the moon's rising and setting. A full moon rises when the sun sets, and a newmoon rises when the sun rises.
It's interesting how new information can change your view of the world.
